I caught The Dark Knight yesterday. It was a fantastic movie. Heath Ledger's performance was brilliant. It's really a pity a fine actor is gone.

The Joker told different stories about how he got his scars.

From his Father:
[holding a knife inside Gamble's mouth] Wanna know how I got these scars? My father was....a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn't like that. Not. One. Bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. Turns to me and he says "Why so serious?" Comes at me with the knife,"Why so serious?" He sticks the blade in my mouth. "Lets put a smile on that face!" And..... Why so serious?

From himself:
[To Rachel Dawes] You look nervous. Is it the scars? You want to know how I got them? Come here. Hey, look at me. So I had a wife, beautiful; like you. Who tells me, I worry too much. Who tells me, I ought to smile more. Who gambles, and gets in deep with sharks. One day they carve her face. We have no money for surgeries. She can't take it! I just want to see her smile again. I just want her to know that I don't care about the scars. So I stick a razor in my mouth and do this... to myself. And you know what? She can't stand the sight of me! She leaves. Now I see the funny side. Now I'm always smiling!

The joker was mysterious, ambiguous but philosophical. He refused to be fingered and understood. The most philosophical moment was the part The Joker mentioned (to Harvey Dent) that fear is when there is no plan - which is so absolutely true. The part that I find touching is that nobody wants to kill anybody in the ferries scene. The saddest was when Harvey saw Batman appeared and knew that his love was going to be killed. I think nothing hurts more than being unable to save someone you really love and helplessly watch the person who matter most to you die. And it was this pain that drove Harvey to insanity.

Christian Bale is known as an activist, and is a supporter of activism and animal welfare groups such as Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund. He has been a vegetarian since age six when he read Charlotte's Web and made the connection between animals and meat. Cool!

It was really sweet of KFP to ask me to this movie and travelling all the way to where I live. He even brought two DVDs for me to kill time. Aww. :)
