Dearie gifted me this gorgeous camera after our lovely brunch at PS Cafe at Palais on the first day of the new year. I have been wanting this particular limited edition red model but was made to understand it is not available in Singapore. So, I actually shelf the desire to get one. Dearie actually secretly purchased a unit from overseas and had it shipped in. It's so sweet of him.

Sadly, just a day after the new year, Dearie's dad passed away from a sudden heart attack. It saddens me to see Dearie so sad.

We had a belated celebration for dearie's birthday with Jude yesterday. We first had a delicious dinner at Crystal Jade Kitchen, ice-cream at Swensons, followed by an enjoyable movie, Couples Retreat. Then, the pressie at Kallang's McCafe! I love the sparkle in his eyes when he unwrapped the gift. :)

On our vacay, Dearie and I discussed about negative ions and we decided to try out Kinohimitsu Health Pads (made in Japan) on our last night. I had mine applied on my shoulders while his on the soles of his feet. And the pads did turn brownish the next morning. We're toxic! Ha. We brought the remaining 2 boxes home. I had the remaining pads applied to the sole of my feet last night. And the pads were tainted brown when I woke up.

According to the FAQ on the website, black indicates heavy toxin deposit and weak body condition; brown for generally ok health condition, normal waste deposit while grey reflects excellent health condition, with little toxin in body. Mmm.

The Red Connection

Dearie and I attended the screening of The Red Connection yesterday at 1 Hamilton Road. Together with a few of my colleagues, dearie participated in the filming of this 1-hour movie as calefare. Many of the audiences were touched by some of the moving scenes. Needless to say, I'm one of them. After the screening, we had dinner with ET & her family at Brewerkz @ Indoor Stadium.

I love it when dearie is dressed down & his hair not gelled. I personally find that look very natural, very sexy.

Another 36 days to our vacay! I've already had the draft itinerary done. :)

We have a confirmed destination! Dearie booked the air tickets this afternoon. We will be visiting this UNESCO World Heritage City in about 40 days' time. This will be our first vacay without our friends. Ooh! I'm already counting down!

Dearie won a pair of tickets to The Blue Mansion and we caught the film this evening at Vivocity. I bumped into a secondary school mate whose friend won a pair of tickets too.

The Blue Mansion is actually Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in Georgetown, Penang. We'll definitely visit this mansion when we visit Penang. ;)

After the film Julie & Julia at The Cathay, dearie and I had dinner at Burger King. He had the BBQ Turkey Bacon Cheese Tendergrill while I had Mushroom Swiss Tendergrill. It's been a long time since I had Mushroom Swiss burger because I have abstained from eating beef. Imagine being able to have it again because they now have it in chicken. It was so yummy!!!

Incidentally, there were so many mouth watering dishes featured in the movie I feel somewhat inspired to cook. I think it's kindda romantic to cook for someone you really love. I've tried cooking for someone in the past but well, it didn't turn out to be romantic or encouraging so I've stopped trying. Cooking out of obligation and out of love's quite different I realise. For dearie, it definitely feels like the latter. His love for me made me wanna try cooking again. So, ahem, I shall when I get the chance. ;)

I read about a beagle whose snout and legs were tapped with masking tape and tied up at the balcony with little shelter on SPCA's email bulletin. Fortunately, someone with a heart reported to the SPCA. I feel so sorry for the dog.

This is not the way to keep the dog quiet.

The dog's snout should never be taped (or muzzled for too long) because unlike humans, dogs do not regulate their body temperature by perspiring through the skin. Instead, they are limited to perspiration through the pads of their paws and by exhaling heat from their mouths when they pant. Dogs have higher temperature (37.2°C–39.2°C) than humans and do not tolerate heat as well. Heat strokes in dogs can be fatal.

Please do not ignore an animal in need of help. You can save its life by calling the SPCA at 62875355. Making a difference is a choice.

I was not at work today because I think I have stomach flu. Dearie came by about 8pm after his appointment at River Valley to surprise me with 姜汁豆花 & sweet corn. He said the former is good for dispelling wind and increasing appetite. He hasn't even had his dinner yet. It's really nice to have someone care this much. I feel so loved & taken care of. :)

I like Nancy Grace and have been following her program on CNN. A former prosecutor before being the anchor of the Nancy Grace Program, she went to law school (from English Literature) after her fiance's murder in 1979.

Her forward, opinionative and no-nonsense broadcasting style is something I enjoy immensely. Listen to her speak up for dogs/animals in Michael Vick's case (6:40).

I think I'm getting her book - The Eleventh Victim. I'm guessing it to be a good read. :)

A bad dream.

I had a bad dream last night, which woke me up in tears.

I remembered feeling very hurt, very disappointed. Even when I have been jostled awake, I couldn't stop crying because it felt so raw, so real, so painful. I actually felt my heart aching.

Perhaps it's the recent spate of events and subconscious thoughts and fears that inspired the dream. Admittedly, my thoughts have been a little wild of late.

This dream reaffirmed something - that he really matters alot to me.

When you allow someone access into the deepest vault of your heart, it can render you totally vulnerable and defenceless. I'm scared. What have I gotten myself into?

We saw The Hangover at Lido. It's a funny film - we had some good laughs. Some scenes were ridiculous though. I think Alan is a total nutcase.

Prior to the movie, we dropped by Ion Orchard - huge mall with mostly equally big brands - not really my kindda shopping place. However, the food court & hall at Basement 4 is pretty interesting though.

We had to catch a cab after the movie as it was already close to midnight. It would have been nearer (and practical) for BB to head home from Orchard but he chose to send me home - the cabfare must be steep. He's such a sweetheart. :)

BB and I went to $ing Dollar! The Musical Comedy About Money on 29 Jul at The Esplanade Theatre. We enjoyed the show tremendously. Kumar's really funny - I like him. Najip's funny too.

We had dinner at Ichiban Boshi - the salmon sashimi rice bowl (sprinkled with sesame oil) is nice! Yummy.

Oh, there's gonna be a brand new Dim Sum Dollies show in 2010. :)

I had a great weekend. It was out of expectation, romantic and fun. The person who planned it all was awfully sweet and thoughtful.

Saturday started with a pleasant lunch at Aerin's. We window-shopped a little, then bought fish & chips from Chippy British Takeaway for snacks and I was told there would be a fantastic place to have our snack. Before I knew it, I was led up to 1306 of Fairmont. A staycation! It was a lovely surprise. To complement the surprise, I was presented with three beautiful stalks of red roses. A while later, I was again surprised - with a visit to The Singapore Flyer. Our flight was scheduled at 1900 hours. He explained he chose that timing so we could witness the transition from day to night. We saw the National Day Parade rehearsal from the top. We had dinner at Popeyes and were distracted with loud explosions of fireworks and managed to catch the last few bursts in the rain - romantic! We even managed to survive a movie marathon therafter - The Horsmen, Taken & Vantage Points. Taken was awesome!

The experiences were very touching and my heart filled with immense bliss. No one has been this good to me. I felt so thankful, so loved. Thank you baby.

The author of the novel I'm reading now is an Irish and the setting of the novel, in Ireland. By Chapter Seven, I'm abruptly reminded of a certain someone - someone I've unintentionally hurt years ago, perhaps twelve.

We used to go to the same primary school. Then he left for college in Ireland after completing his secondary school. We met again at a friend's birthday party (during his vacation) and the reunion sparkled a brief romance. I know he was really sweet to me but the realisation that I didn't truly love him made me feel very guilty. I didn't think I was being fair to him and decided one evening, after several months from the day we held hands, to let him down. It wasn't at all easy. I cried buckets that night.

He was supposed to continue his university studies in Scotland after we've parted but I'm not sure if he did because I've lost total contact with him. I don't know where in the world he is now and frankly, there was no need to know. I hope he has found true love like I did and is happy wherever he is. Maybe one day, if fate permits, we'll meet again. It's always heartwarming to see an old friend.

I realised there are 4 different cover illustrations for the novel "If You Could See Me Now".

I saw the first at Borders Wheelock. Yet to come across the second and third. Purchased the fourth at Kinokuniya Ngee Ann City this evening. I like the last cover illustration best - there's something magical about it.

Interestingly, the name Saoirse (a character in the novel) is pronounced as SEER-sha, which means freedom in Irish Gaelic.

I need to find out - if Ivan really exist. :)

The legendary king of pop is gone for good. The news stunned me somewhat and kindda dampen the Friday mood a little. I'm not a fan but still, I felt the loss. Afterall he was an iconic figure.

I guess, that's life. Everyone has to die, even if you are famous and rich. At 50, his time on earth's considered short. I couldn't help but wonder if he lived his life happy. Did he leave this planet with good memories?

Life is indeed short. And vulnerable.

I don't know how much time I still have on this planet. I don't even wanna know. Seriously. When it's time to go, I'll leave. Before that time's up, I just wanna live, laugh and love each day.

BB brought me to a really nice place for dinner last night - Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe. We went to the branch at Wheelock (he mentioned the one at Chijmes is more romantic).

Went Borders thereafter and read two and a half chapters of If You Could See Me Now by Cecilia Ahern. Interesting. Can't wait to catch the film adaptation cos Hugh Jackman's gonna be Ivan! But, I think it's gonna be quite a wait. Release is likely to be in 2011. Maybe I should just read the book first? :)

Something I witnessed last evening rendered me disturbed.

Two crows were aggressive to passerbys and even the feral cats. My malay neighbour had to shield herself with an umbrella (my mum thought she looked really comical carrying the umbrella with no sun and no rain) while trying to bring the cat away from the irritated crows. My brother who was heading for his car was also not spared - I think he was almost pecked - this got my mum upset, naturally because her son was "attacked". She wanted me to report the aggressive crows so something could be done. I threw her the unbelievable look and asked her if this was how buddhists should behave and said she could call herself because I will not.

I explained to her the possibility of the birds' behaviour - that they had their nest/offsprings somewhere close and they were displaying natural behavior - like how my mum got upset when my brother was "attacked" - the birds were merely trying to protect their family. Birds and animals are not like human - they do not usually attack for other reasons except to defend and for survival.

Someone apparently did call the authorities and a few men with brooms came and spotted a tree with the crows' nest. I was told (by mum) they removed the nest (I don't know what they did to it). I don't know if this was the best solution in an urban city.

All I felt at that point was sadness. I felt very sorry for the innocent little birds who came to this ugly world. I feel sorry for their parents who tried their best to protect them and still lost them - I believe the birds are capable of grief. I wish there was a better solution.

It was a disturbing evening.

The Reader starring Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes and David Kross looks really promising. I saw the trailer.

During the making of the film in early 2008, producers Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack passed away, Minghella in March at the age of 54 and two months later, Pollack at 73.

Film character Michael represent the New Germany while Hanna the old.

I am deeply disturbed and saddened after I read about The Holocaust and the Nazi Human Experimentation. How could anyone do such unforgivable terrible acts to fellow humans?

I wonder why the title of this song is called "Because I'm a Girl".

I was at ET's place for CNY visitation yesterday evening. My fave little girl was there. She was so sweet -- she didn't change out of her ballet costume so I could see her in it. It's a pity my camera was not with me. Everyone I like & care about was there. :)

We had delicious Nasi Lemak for dinner and played a few rounds of Blackjack. My nett winnings: $0.50.

Today, I will be visiting Mrs C's family.

I do yearn for a good vacation now. I'm so burnt out. I need to relax, rejuvenate and recharge. I've been keeping my Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows unread since its release so that I could read it during my vacation.

This Mar, I am likely to hit Perth. I've never been to Perth. I've heard a lot about it being boring. But as I was reading up about the capital city of Western Australia, I realised it ain't so bad - in fact - I think I may like the place. Fremantle & Subiaco seem like great shopping & dining areas. The Caversham Wildlife Park had me squeaked in delight -- I could meet the koalas, feed the kangaroos and craddle Big bubs the wombat!

What makes a vacation great? -- A good book, my gorgeous ipod nano, my trustworthy camera, a travel companion whom I can be totally at ease and be silly with, my travel journal and most importantly, a happy state of mind.

Chinese New Year

I used to like Chinese New Year when I was younger but not anymore. I can't remember when exactly I stop liking this festive occasion - I guess it should be around my early teenage years - when my cousins and I no longer find games such as "Catching", "Heart Attack" or "Happy Family" fun anymore. We were also no longer deprived of soft drinks and junk food so the occasion was no longer appealing.

I was brought up in a non-gambling environment so poker cards was a rare sight. The standard activities were to eat, drink and watch television. Because I see my cousins only once a year, we have nothing much to talk about and for my much younger cousins, nothing to talk about because of the generation gap. My youngest cousin is only three. I'm the oldest grandchild. I have nothing to say to my aunties and uncles so I'd rather not try too hard - its too superficial. I'm sure the feeling is mutual. I'm not even close to my parents, let alone relatives. At times, I wish my parents had been different in the way they raised my brother and me - we are emotionally too independent. That being said, it doesn't mean we are incapable of love - we are - just that we are not the clingy sort.

As the years passes, the hours I clocked each year at my grandparents' place dwindle. This year, I stayed for two hours. The last, three. Even Cousin B didn't turn up this year. I haven't seen his brother for more than four years. Frankly, I'd rather stay at home with my pet dogs and my laptop.

Strangely, nobody asked me about my boyfriend - I was glad. It was the second year I visited my grandparents' place without him. We broke up in Sep 07, after eight years. I never really officially told my parents about us but I guess it was easy to tell and so, it became an unspoken awareness. My brother, however, brought his girlfriend along for the first time. The others didn't make it to this stage. I think he is serious about this girl.

I don't know if I will want to go to my grandparents' place next year. Maybe if I see someone by then, it would be a reason.

今晚是小娘惹精彩大结局。剧情真的扣人心弦，牵动人心。好多次，泪不由自主的往脸颊滑。

从戏里，感受到亲情，友情和爱情。也体会到了仇恨和嫉妒的可怕，学会了原谅的宽容和饮水思源的感恩。

戏里最欣赏的两个人物是陈盛和菊香。陈盛对菊香那份默默执著的爱让我很感动。在他临死那一刻还是深爱着她。菊香对山本洋介不离不弃的爱也让我同样感动。

最令我心疼的人物是善良的玉珠。为了帮月娘，在阴差阳错的一瞬间，她的一生陷进了没有回头路的悲剧。

最后，还是对有情人不能终成眷属感到一些难过。陈锡和月娘明明彼此相爱，为什么不能在一起？这就是所谓的命运吗？现实生活中，有多少恋人也经历同样的遭遇？这种刻骨铭心，一辈子的遗憾？

Time flies. I'm surprised I actually survived a bad year. 2008 hasn't been good for me. Perhaps, it's high time to let go of some old & uncertain feelings and not bring them into the new year. Maybe, some things are meant to be the way they are.

I wanted for him to try Hainanese Chicken Rice but alas, they were sold out.

It was funny listening to him recount how he spent Tue night. He had dinner at Jumbo Seafood, some drinks at Duxton and Clarke Quay and finally, was brought on a visual tour to "four floors of whores" somewhere near his hotel by some of his coworkers.

Interestingly, he was amused with some of the words we use here in Singapore vs. USA.

Dhs and I went Newton Circus for early dinner last night. We had Hokkien Mee, Mee Goreng, Oyster Omelette and BBQ Stingray. He enjoyed the last dish the best and promised to try replicate this dish for his wife. Stingray, I think, is not exactly Skate. Well, actually, I'm kindda feeling bad for eating the stingray because they do look adorable. Ok, no more stingray for me.

We then took the 7.05pm bus hub service from Sheraton Towers to get to Night Safari. We hopped on the 45-minute tram ride and walked 2 out of 3 walking trails - Forest Giants Trail and Leopard Trail. I saw many animals for the first time. We both concluded that we had a wonderful time at the world's first night wildlife park. If not for dhs' visit, I would have never set foot into this gorgeous attraction.

We got back to the hotel by cab which cost about $13. I had fun looking at dhs' pics on his brand new and sexy aluminium macbook. I also got to try american coke (which dhs brought specially for me) which doesn't taste at all like the coke we are used to here in SIN.

Ingredients in SIN coke:
Carbonated water, sugar, caramel colour, phosphoric acid, flavourings and caffeine, contains permitted food additives of non-animal origin.

Ingredients in USA coke:
Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, cramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors, caffeine.

The difference is that we use sugar while they use fructose corn syrup.

Dhs bought some chocolate gold coin he thought was SIN-design coins from Bugis to be used as Hanukkah gelt. Actually, they are not SIN coins at all. :P

He had ayam penyet ria for lunch today and thought it tasted very delicious. Our plan to visit Sentosa today was aborted because of the rain and also on my part, a last minute arrangement to visit a friend.

Meanwhile, I have to congratulate PW for completing The Singapore Marathon yesterday. :)

Singapore Changi Airport

It's been a long time since I received anyone at the airport. It's a lovely feeling to be at the arrival hall, seeing people embracing and hugging their loved ones, welcoming them home. The feeling at the departure hall is quite the contrary.

KE641 landed at 2128 hours at Terminal 1 (Belt 21). It was good to see dhs again. The last time we met was about half a year back.

After checking in and settling his luggage at the hotel, we strolled Orchard Road and ended the night with drinks and a margarita pizza at Penarakan Place.

I have to say, Orchard Road dressed in colorful festive lights is kindda nice at 1.30am, without the buzz.

Dhs is coming to town.

Dhs should be arriving SIN in less than an hour. This long weekend will be busy. We have plans to visit the Night Safari and Sentosa. I think it will likely be a case of the blind leading the blind. I've never been to Night Safari and the last time I explored Sentosa was many moons ago. I suppose, getting lost can be an adventure too. Fortunately, Singapore ain't that huge. Ha.

Singapore hasn't much night activities I realised, except for pubbing/clubbing, suppers and late night movies. Even last entry to Night Safari is before midnight at 11pm.

Gotta run now to the airport. Ciao!

I caught The Office Party on Thursday.

Synopsis:
At the advertising company Chapman and Howard, the staff have taken great pains to prepare for their traditional Christmas bash, and to ensure that they avoid scandals similar to last year's which resulted in a visit from the police and the Managing Director's divorce. But when the drinks flow and the good times roll, the party lurches from one disaster to another.

It was quite a unique and good experience for me as I've never been to a theatre play. However, I prefer Dim Sum Dollies because it was funnier and there were a lot of singing.

I received an awfully sweet pressie the same night. A gorgeous 8GB ipod nano chromatic in pink! It was a pleasant surprise because the gift was totally unexpected. I'm honestly touched by the lovely gesture. I've started using it and love the features - shake to shuffle, built in accelerometer, genius & the 2" screen. My old 2GB ipod nano will now retire. :)

I wonder, and I really do. Is it so difficult to live and let live? As we improve as a society, are we receding as human beings?

I was at a particular coffeeshop with PW yesterday when we saw a black mutt puppy (about the size of a 8 mths old retriever puppy) with a collar resting near a table. Next to that table was a table occupied by a woman her her young daughter.

I overheard the woman telling the cleaner auntie to remove the puppy. The auntie wasn't sure what to do. Then the woman summoned the cleaner uncle and repeated herself. I told the woman the puppy had a collar and may belonged to someone (as in to a legitimate owner or to someone kind who has been caregiving for it). She said the puppy wasn't with any owner as far as she had observed. I spoke to the cleaner duo and I'm glad they agreed with me that since the puppy wasn't bothering anyone, we should just leave it alone. The puppy looked absolutely harmless and meek. It may perhaps be waiting for his caregiver or seeking some company. I have to say the puppy's sad look broke my heart. I wish I could bring it home.

I was furious with that woman. What exactly is her problem? If she thinks the presence of a homeless little dog spoils her appetite, then perhaps she should consider dining in a private establishment such as a restaurant instead. What lesson is she teaching her daughter? The lesson of "How to be unkind"? I swear I would make sure she goes to the police station if she kicked the puppy under my nose. I lingered around a little to make sure the puppy was ok before leaving with a heavy heart.

I hope the puppy remains safe and sound and be looked after by someone kind.
